Normal Modes of a Simple Cantilever Beam

Problem: Using Patran/MSC Nastran, convert the simple cantilever beam into a normal modes analysis using the same information from the previous problem. The density of the material is 0.285 lb/in3.

Step 1 - Open an existing Patran database.

1) Click on File Open from the File menu or from the Defaults Toolbar as shown.

2) Click on the database Cantilever_Beam and click OK.

Step 2 - Modify the isotropic material: density of 0.285

1) Under the Properties tab, select Isotropic.

2) Click on New from the File menu or from the Defaults Toolbar as shown. Type the name of the new database as Cantilever_Beam and click OK.

Step 3 - Run a normal modes analysis using MSC Nastran.

1) Under the Analysis tab, select Entire Model.

2) Change the Job Name box to Cantilever_beam_modal.

3) Click on the Solution Type... tab and select Normal Modes.

4) Then Click on Solution Parameters and change the Wt-Mass Conversion to 0.00259. Click OK, OK, and Apply.

Step 4- Attach results file, then create animated fringe and deformation plots.

1) Click on XDB under the Access Results submenu.

2) Ensure the appropriate Job Name is selected and click Apply.

3) Under the Results tab, select Fringe/Deformation.

4) Select a Mode from the Result Cases and plot Eigenvectors, Translational for Fringe and Displacement.

5) Select Animate to animate your results. Click Apply.
