An MSC software customer won a contract to develop an unmanned composite aircraft. This required immediate access to specialized aircraft analysis skills, including aeroelastic loads, aircraft preliminary design, and the analysis of composite structures. MSC's Consulting Services provided a consulting engineer with more than twenty years of experience to work on-site alongside the customers' engineers. This consulting engineer not only performed structural analyses for the customer, augmenting their engineering staff. The consulting engineer also assisted the customer by helping training their new staff in the use of advanced capabilities of MSC's software products, allowing the customer to staff up more rapidly and maximize the value of their investment.
MSC conducted simulation of an aircraft electronic system, including the printed circuit board, electronic components, insulators, mounts, and the enclosure. MSC not only provided the simulation, but also a report for submittal by MSC's customer to their customer and supported a design review and design changes.
A customer needed to reduce warranty claims for shipping damage to consumer electronics products. MSC's consulting services group established a process for them to simulate dropping of their products, including the cardboard box and foam end caps. Using these "virtual tests", the customer was able to optimize their packaging to minimize the probability of damage while maintaining affordable packaging and shipping. As part of this project, MSC also developed specialized utilities for the customer to determine the accumulated damage from repeated drops with varying orientations.
MSC's consulting engineers have extensive experience in the analysis of vascular stents, functioning as an extension of the engineering departments of stent developers. Although stents are not complex mechanically, their deployment and service environments are very complex and premature failures are not acceptable. MSC's consulting engineers have analyzed dozens of stent designs to support design development and approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
These simulations have included:
MSC's consulting engineers understand the needs of biomedical engineers and regulatory requirements.
A customer asks MSC to perform a flutter analysis to support an aircraft modification that was being developed. MSC developed a dynamic structural model, correlated it to ground vibration test, constructed an unsteady aerodynamic model, and coupled the structural and aerodynamic models together for flutter analysis. MSC not only performed the flutter analysis, but demonstrated every step of the process to a member of the customer's staff, transferring the technology for applying MSC Nastran's aeroelastic capabilities to the customer to maximize the value of their investment.
