Thermo-Mechanical Analysis in SOL 400 has been in MSC Nastran since 2008. MSC Nastran has features of multi-discipline analysis where various analyses can be coupled or chained. Multi-physics is a thermo-mechanical bi-directional coupling. Coupling the two physics is advantageous when they are closely linked together. For example in frictional heat generation or heat generation due to plastic heating. Chaining is running the two physics in sequence. We will discuss the procedure and advantages of doing a multi-physics coupled problem and chained thermal-mechanical problems. Also look at the interaction of thermal and structural analysis. New thermal enhancements in MSC NASTRAN 2013.1 in Sequential Thermo-Mechanical with Quadratic Temperature Distribution will be covered.

Load (time) stepping procedure is important in nonlinear analysis. The NLSTEP bulk data provides a unified load stepping scheme that replaces existing options entries such as NLPARM, TSTEPNL, NLPCI, and NLADAPT. This option can be used for statics and dynamics, fixed and adaptive load stepping, definition of convergence criteria and other options for mechanical, thermal and coupled analysis. In MSC Nastran 2012, NLSTEP option is extended with a new keyword that automatically sets up the entries for the time stepping adjustment and convergence tolerance. This makes it possible to use smart default based on users’ judgment of the nonlinearity of the model to be analyzed.

Fatigue life analysis of mechanical systems has historically been performed as a post processing operation, gathering and entering the three fundamental inputs of finite element stresses, load time histories and fatigue material properties (S-N curves) into a separate and distinct fatigue solver. MSC Nastran 2013 introduces a fundamental paradigm shift in this logic through a direct integration of fatigue life solutions into the finite element solver. This new technology is entitled Nastran Embedded Fatigue, or NEF for short.

This presentation briefly review existing methods for composite failure analysis such as progressive failure analysis, delamination based on stress criterion and cohesive interface, and VCCT crack propagation by means of splitting element, global remeshing and breaking glued contact, followed by more detailed discussion and demo of new failure analysis features.
