RESEARCH GOALS: Mr. Masithulela and The University of Cape Town are studying cardiac mechanics after treated and non-treated myocardial infarction (heart attack) to prevent progression of dilated heart failure.

METHODS:

MSC RESEARCH ASSIST AWARD: Mr. Masithulela and The University of Cape Town were awarded Marc to perform both active and passive heart muscle simulation.

BIO: Mr. Masithulela holds a BSc Mechanical Engineering and an MSc Engineering from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Mr. Masithulela began his career as an engineer at state-owned railway company, Transnet Fright Rail Pty Ltd, gaining knowledge and experience with finite element modeling techniques. He has also worked as a Design Engineer at Tenova Pyromet before being appointed as a Regulatory Office Mechanical Engineer at the National Nuclear Regulator of South Africa.
