MSC/NASTRAN V70.5.1 Million DOF Performance Data

This page contains graphs of CPU and Elapsed times for two models larger than 1 million DOF. The runs were made by hardware vendors with specific run specifications. Hardware vendors were also given the opportunity to rerun the jobs with different command line paramters. Results of these runs are labeled MODEL_opt in the graph.

Below is a summary of the test problems.
Name Ndof Description SOL MEM SCR Disk I/O Transferred Comments
XXCMD 1,519,472 Car Body 103 400 Mb 42.6 Gb 2116 Gb 1076 Modes
XXDMD 1,920,855 Engine 103 960 Mb 29.9 Gb 475 Gb 17 Modes

Comments are listed below:

  • The parameters for the optimized runs are vendor confidential.
  • The number of solves is different for each vendor. This difference is a result of the fact that shift logic is based on various module times. The CPU and elapsed times (in seconds) as well as the number of solves are shown in the following table:

  • The CPU time is greater than Elapsed for XXDMD on the N4000 even though only 1 CPU was requested by MSC/NASTRAN. The reason that this occurs is because the operating system used multiple CPUs for I/O even though MSC/NASTRAN used only 1 CPU.
  • XXDMD on the HP/N4000 was run with a patch for HPUX 11.0 MSC/NASTRAN V70.5 executables for performance reasons.
