Static and Dynamic Load Synthesis for Vehicle Durability Simulation using Adams
Virtual prototyping has been widely accepted as a system design/performance prediction tool before production. Vehicle design for durability is a long-established discipline, affecting all aspects of vehicle engineering. This presentation demonstrates the use of advanced simulation methods for components load prediction at different stages of the program. The presentation will be focused on the Static (Half Car Loads) and Dynamic (Hybrid and Virtual Road Loads) load simulation method, and its potential advantages for the vehicle durability testing and development process using ADAMS/Car.

Application of Adams in the Development of a 4-Post Fixture for a Tractor-Trailer
Hendrickson is developing a new 4-post style fixture to apply vertical loads to various Axles of a full Tractor-Trailer. An ADAMS model was developed to study the loads realized at the Tires while driving on roads with different roughness magnitudes. These loads were then used to correctly size the Actuators for the fixture.

NATC Virtual Proving Ground (VPG): Using real-world proving ground data to simulate vehicle duty cycles and accelerated durability testing in the virtual environment.
NATC has partnered with MSC to provide a Virtual Proving Ground (VPG) consisting of courses and discrete events that are often used in vehicle duty cycle and accelerated durability testing. This session will describe and demonstrate this VPG implementation in Adams. Development process of vehicle duty cycles, including an example for a class 8 vocational truck will be discussed.

Improving Vehicle Models with Neuro Network Modeling Method
Accurate vehicle models are essential for new vehicle development. One of the challenges for creating accurate vehicle models is modelling the nonlinear and dynamic elements such as dampers, bushings, mounts, and air springs. The behavior of these elements depends upon the loading history. The traditional spline modeling technic cannot model these elements accurately. With more and more active/semi-active dampers and mounts are used in vehicle design, the need for creating accurate models for nonlinear dynamic elements is significantly amplified.

This presentation introduces a method to model the nonlinear dynamic elements using neuro network modeling method. The advantages for this approach include:
  • It is much more accurate than spline modeling method since it considers the loading history.
  • It can model a wide range of components (including active components).
  • It can model a wide range of frequency content.
The neuro network models can be implemented in ADAMS and MATLAB models. They can also be compiled to C++ code and run in real-time environment for real-time driving simulation.

IDIADA will show the full range of service offered to evaluate durability performance of a vehicle during the complete design cycle of a vehicle and how ADAMS plays a key role in it. A VPG use case will show how a virtual load cascading correlates to real test data as well on how this loads are postprocessed to generate both Road simulator loads for MTS 329 as well as equivalent and simplified component test loads with a single actuator.

Adams-CAEfatigue Based Process Flow from Virtual Proving Ground to Full Vehicle Durability Duty Cycle Analysis
In this session an Adams Car full vehicle model is run through encrypted virtual test tracks from Applus IDIADA (see dedicated session) to predict the durability loads.

A novel template based Process Flow is applied to the virtual proving ground campaign to analyse the fatigue duty cycle of the full vehicle model. Both a stand-alone and FE embedded fatigue solver approaches are demonstrated, highlighting respective benefits and performances.

Virtual Testing and Its Applications
Virtual testing is to use analysis software, such as ADAMS, MSC NASTRAN, and Simulink to simulate physical testing. Virtual testing is used more and more to accelerate product development. The main reasons for this trend include:
  • Computer simulation accuracy improves fast.
  • Virtual testing can be conducted before a prototype is available. Therefore, it is possible to identify design issue early in development cycle.
  • Virtual models can be easily validated by the mimic physical tests.
  • Virtual testing can help setting up complicated test.
For many years, MTS has been using virtual testing to develop its testing systems and help its customers to establish their virtual testing platform. Through several examples, this presentation introduces how virtual testing tool is used at MTS in ground vehicle, motorcycle, civil/structure, and aero industries.

Case Study of Using Adams Vehicle Simulation to Obtain Transmission Loads and Romax Enduro to Perform Component Rating
We present the approach and results of a case study aiming to evaluate a use case for linking Adams and Romax. The use case we chose for this study involves running time domain simulation in Adams of a vehicle completing a prescribed drive cycle based on the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) and extracting the transmission torque, speed and selected gear at each time step. This data is then processed and applied to a more detailed model of the transmission in Romax software. The Romax model and corresponding duty cycles obtained from Adams are used to perform component rating for durability assessment.
