Problem: Demonstrate the use of structural analysis with pressure loading and contact condition starting from an initial state exhibiting a gap or space between the two bodies, including friction.

1) Click on Open file.

2) Choose hertz.mud and click OK.



1) Click on Zoom to view the desired display.

2) Click and choose the Contact tab.

3) Click Edit.

4) Choose Plate on the Edit Contact Body, then click OK.

5) Click Properties.

6) Enter 0.3 for the Friction Coefficient and then click OK.



1) Click and choose the Contact tab.

2) Click Edit.

3) Choose Cylinder on the Edit Contact Body, then click OK.

4) Click Properties.

5) Enter 0.2 for the Friction Coefficient and then click OK.



1) Click and choose on Jobs tab.

2) Click on Show Menu.

3) Choose and click on Copy.

4) Click on Properties.

5) Choose and click on Contact Control.

6) Make sure that Coulomb Bilinear (Displacement) is selected. Then click OK.





1) Click on Run on the Job.

2) Click on Save Model.

3) Then click on Submit.

4) Click on Open Post File to open the result menu.



1) Choose Deformed Only for the Style under Deformed Shape.

2) Under Scaler Plot choose Contour Bands. Click on Scalar.

3) Choose Equivalent of Total Strain, and then click OK.

4) Click on the Monitor Result File icon to monitor the result file.

5) Under View menu, click on Plot Control....

6) Uncheck Nodes. Click Redraw, and then click OK.







1) Under View menu, click on Plot Control....

2) Make sure that Nodes are check to be able to screen pick the nodes. Click Redraw, and then click OK.

3) Click on Zoom to zoom in.

4) Click on Tools on the main menu and choose Distance.

5) To find the distance, Screen Pick the nodes. As shown on the image below.

6) The distance is measured to be 1.092.
