This presentation shows some of MSC Software's advanced thermal modeling tools including new products to be released in 2011. Models are built in Patran 2011 with orbital heating or terrestrial solar loads computed by Thermica which transparently integrates into Patran. Temperatures are solved using the Sinda thermal analyzer and its Patran preference. Demonstrations models of a spacecraft in orbit with articulating solar panels, shielding of an automobiles exhaust system and a solar water heater will be presented and discussed.

This SimAcademy session is intended primarily for the university audience and covers the basics of file import and geometry manipulation through the new Feature Recognition tool. File/Import allows for the importation of model files from a number of different sources, such as a Patran database, Patran 2.5 neutral file, MD Nastran input file format, or one of several CAD formats such as: CATIA PROENGINEER UNIGRAPHICS PARASOLID ACIS IGES FILE PATRAN NEUTRAL FILE STEP FILE Once the model is imported, it can be meshed, edited using the core tools in PATRAN, or by the Feature Recognition to change/delete features such as holes, fillets and chamfers. This lecture will introduce Feature Recognition as an editing tool.

Shock Spectrum Analysis and Response Spectrum Analysis are methods used to estimate maximum dynamic response of a structure. The advantage of these methods over a conventional transient analysis is economy and simplicity. The only major calculation step is obtaining a sufficient number of normal modes to represent the entire frequency range of the input excitation and resulting response. The presentation will show different how to create response spectra for a given transient response and also how to analyze structure subjected to response spectra input.

MSC Nastran has been a primary tool for performing dynamic analysis since originating in 1972. When performing a modal transient or modal frequency response analysis, the truncation of the normal modes can influence the dynamic results. This is a common aspect of performing modal dynamic solutions, and pretty well understood. However, the modal truncation can also impact quasi-static response in the structure. This effect has been mitigated in the past using modal acceleration techniques. For the past decade, MSC has offered residual vectors as a replacement for the modal acceleration method.

Because the results of FEA depend on the mesh, one always wants to generate a better one. With this in mind, this webinar will cover local refinement called adaptive meshing. Adaptive meshing is an automatic meshing strategy for improving results by adding elements in areas that meet specific error criteria. Adaptive meshing may be needed in regions that experiences high local stress/strain gradients, extreme element distortions, and incorrect boundary representation due to large deformation. Marc has a capability to perform local adaptive mesh refinement for improving the accuracy of the solution. The adaptive meshing is available for 2-D and 3-D elements. The adaptive mesh generation increases the number of elements and nodes to improve the accuracy of the solution. This capability is applicable for both linear elastic and nonlinear analysis.

The Virtual mass method has been available in MSC Nastran for a long time. It is used to model the additional mass that structure experiences when accelerating in contact with fluid. The VM method has several benefits making it an attractive method when dealing with certain problems involving fluids. For instance, there is no need to model the interior domain of the fluid, so no solid fluid mesh is required, only a simple list of elements, which are in contact with the fluid. If the fluid has a finite volume, a coordinate system defines, the orientation of the free surface of the fluid along with a location parameter define its offset from cord systems X-Y plane.
