SimAcademy Webinar Archive: Adaptive Time Stepping Procedure in Implicit Nonlinear Analysis

Load (time) stepping procedure is important in nonlinear analysis. The NLSTEP bulk data provides a unified load stepping scheme that replaces existing options entries such as NLPARM, TSTEPNL, NLPCI, and NLADAPT. This option can be used for statics and dynamics, fixed and adaptive load stepping, definition of convergence criteria and other options for mechanical, thermal and coupled analysis. In MSC Nastran 2012, NLSTEP option is extended with a new keyword that automatically sets up the entries for the time stepping adjustment and convergence tolerance. This makes it possible to use smart default based on users’ judgment of the nonlinearity of the model to be analyzed.

Fatigue life analysis of mechanical systems has historically been performed as a post processing operation, gathering and entering the three fundamental inputs of finite element stresses, load time histories and fatigue material properties (S-N curves) into a separate and distinct fatigue solver. MSC Nastran 2013 introduces a fundamental paradigm shift in this logic through a direct integration of fatigue life solutions into the finite element solver. This new technology is entitled Nastran Embedded Fatigue, or NEF for short.

MSC Nastran provides a flutter analysis solution as one part of the aeroelastic analysis capability based on unsteady subsonic and supersonic flow. The unsteady aerodynamic methods are small perturbation methods for flat plates. The flutter analysis solution is used to determine the aeroelastic stability of a fixed wing aircraft. The flutter summary results provide damping and frequency values versus velocity listed in the standard (f06) output and/or plotted with the venerable XYPLOT requests. Complex eigenvector (flutter mode shape) results may be plotted with Patran or FLDS.

Buckling is a critical state of stress and deformation, at which a slight disturbance causes a gross additional deformation, or perhaps a total structural failure of the part. Structural behavior of the part near or beyond 'buckling' is not evident from the normal static Analysis. Therefore, a Buckling analysis is required. Also, From an FE analysis point of view, a buckling analysis is used to find the lowest multiplication factor for the load that will cause a structure to buckle. The purpose of such an analysis is to calculate the buckling load factor and buckled shape of the structure.. This webinar will introduce various methods of performing Buckling Analysis in MSC Nastran and Patran.

SimAcademy Webinar Archive: FRF, FBA, and TPA Capability in MSC Nastran 2010

The frequency response function (FRF) and FRF-based assembly (FBA) are new capabilities in MSC Nastran. FRFs can be used to represent components. This capability facilitates the computation of the FRFs of individual components and also the subsequent computation of the FRFs of an assembly of such components from their individual FRFs. It supports test FRF components in the FBA process. Also it allows the FBA process to handle a single FRF component without any connection data. Such an FRF-based assembly process represents an alternative to component mode synthesis (or Modal Substructuring). This method also lends itself to tracking load paths or energy flows through a structure. This approach may be regarded as an alternative to mode participation studies. This latter feature, commonly referred as transfer path analysis (TPA). Note that this session is NOT a substitute for formal training.

MD Nastran supports two methods of Fluid Structure Interactions: Open FSI by coupling with Third Party CFD solution Explicit Solution using SOL 700 This presentation will cover FSI simulation using explicit solution (SOL 700) which couples the structural solver from LS-Dyna and fluid Solver in Dytran. The objective of fluid-structure interaction using the coupling algorithm is to enable the material modeled in fluid and Structural meshes to interact. The coupling algorithm computes the interaction between the two sets of elements enabling complex simulations such as Bird Strike, Sloshing, Blast and Airbag analysis.
